The Gillmor Gang — Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, and Steve Gillmor — view the world through PRISM glasses. We, or me, couldn’t help wondering what part of surpised we are at the idea we’re being monitored and scraped within an inch of our metadata. It’s hard to tell whether we’re worried about losing our individual freedoms, or having to do the hard work of balancing the tradeoffs in a dangerous world of drones and the streams that feed them.

Still, the stakes couldn’t be higher as we sell our digital identities for the price of free access to the flow of information. And what about the cost of our freedom to share the music that defined the creative revolution of the 60′s and the video revolution of Mad Men and Netflix? From Richie Havens on the stage at Woodstock to Obama’s politics of the personal, we can’t afford to sit back and ignore the costs, and the value, of swimming in the social waters. Ben Franklin may not have anticipated Twitter, but Paul Revere did. Honey, disconnect the phone.

The Gillmor Gang — Robert Scoble, Keith Teare, John Taschek, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor — recorded early on a Thursday morning, flush with Apple CEO Tim Cook’s read-between-the-lines performance at D11. Cook took some 80 minutes to say very little, or so say the pundits and Wall Street spinners. But the Gang found plenty to decrypt, including thoughts on Apple TV, wearable computing, value versus volume, and just about everything Steve Jobs used to do minus the famous reality distortion field.

But as the lack of smoke cleared, what was left over suggested a robust fall and a steady drumbeat of evolution from Apple to match Google’s flashier but Webier approach. Lost in the shuffle was Microsoft’s X-Box announcements, leaving the strong impression of the two leaders pulling away from the pack. But it was fun to watch @scobleizer wake up over the course of the show, as we realized, like Cook, how much we love the art of surprise.

What has been framed as a competition became something more, as Twitter streams, scanner apps, and local news streams meshed with CNN et al.

Inspired curation by @dannysullivan produced an authoritative feed of credible crowdsourced updates. Tweeters at the scene produced wry commentary on reporter exaggeration, eventually encouraging a hybrid blend of real time speed and news judgement. Our thoughts remain with the brave and resilient people of Watertown, Cambridge, and Boston.

The Gillmor Gang — Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor — picture themselves in a boat on a river, as the first wave of Google Glass hits the network, aka Scoble’s forehead. @scobleizer promises to never take off this thing, and even the hyperbole doesn’t refute the central notion. As was evidenced over the last few days in Boston, the whole world is not only watching but feeding the realtime stream. Social meets mainstream.

As Google Glass goes into alpha, Apple’s stock collapse seems to indicate a changing of the guard. But our bet (I don’t think I’m alone in this) reflects not only the volatility of who’s on first but the value of a real horse race in floating all boats. More likely we’ll see a back and forth motion as Apple, Google, Twitter, and Facebook surge ahead and then are overtaken. The winners — that would be us.

The Gillmor Gang — Doc Searls, Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor — takes turns sizing up the new season. With Steve Ballmer running out of room and close to the warning track, we talk about who might be called up from the minors. The consensus is that Steve has 18 months to tur n things around. He’s a proud man, though, and may make the big move to Emeritus sooner than too late.

Dave Winer is back with a nifty pivot on Google Reader’s trip to the showers. The Gillmor Gang rode RSS and podcasting to the Big Show, and it’s good to see Dave going even further back to his outliner roots. More than anything, Winer made the hard stuff look easy and gave the tech generation a voice. Today it seems obvious, but Winer, with a little help from his friends, changed the way the game is played. Batter up.

With notifications becoming the default interaction point with email, social, and app inputs, the Gang is split down the middle.

On one side is @scobleizer and @jtaschek and partially @kevinmarks; on the other more correct side is @kteare and me, @stevegillmor. We think Apple has the more elegant if slightly hamstrung solution, while the rest are Android fanboys waiting desperately for the latest Samsung phone. And of course, @scobleizer sees everything through his forthcoming Glassware, or as he joked, being a Glasshole about it. Oh, the humanity.

The Gillmor Gang — Danny Sullivan, John Borthwick, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, and Steve Gillmor — take advantage of the East Coast blizzard to toast some marshmallows on the fire. First up is the Series A drought and impact of the cloud on startup funding. Next, the big pivot to Spoilerland, aka Binge TV.

House of Cards is having just that impact on the television industry, collapsing the mid tier pay networks into an environment much like planes stacked up over Newark. It’s Breaking Bad followed by Mad Men followed by Arrested Development and so forth. How the broadcast networks get past the new air traffic controllers is anybody’s guess, but Netflix continues to confound the experts and delight the customers.

The Gillmor Gang — Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor — watched in amazement as Apple’s stock price tanked due to their blowout quarter and two-thirds ownership of the U.S. smartphone revenue. @scobleizer gave it a 70% chance that he would bolt the Apple Fanboy ranks by the end of February, but only a 10% chance that an unexpected breakthrough from an unexpected source would change the world by the end of 2013.

That, of course, leaves Google to account for Robert’s waning enthusiasm for Tim Cook’s lack of leadership and lack of SteveJobsness. But what Jobs triggered was a continuous wave of innovation driven by the engaged forces of the Google/Apple contest. And as @jtaschek points out, fostered in the competitive playground of the carriers where innovation in bandwidth fuels the social players. You don’t have to wait for the end of February to place your own bet on the percentage likelihood of disruption in this year of dreams coming true.

The Gillmor Gang — Danny Sullivan, Robert Scoble, John Taschek, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor — have some fun with Facebook’s new GraphSearch and advances in medical techniques. We all agree that when Facebook says it’s not about search, well, it’s all about search. Should Google be quaking in its boots as @scobleizer shows the Jets and Giants parking lot in the post season that is Google+, or does Foursquare get its oxygen cut off by the Facebook hoards looking for a good restaurant?

GraphSearch is notable for being the first Facebook Beta launch, unless you count every one of the privacy relaunches. We have some fun at Google’s expense, but the reality is that the winners — Google, Apple, Facebook — are crowding out the losers in the battle for screentime. Finally, the Gang calls on @kevinmarks to honor the memory of Aaron Swartz, an old soul gone all too young.
